The Unité de Nutrition Azotée des Plantes (Laboratory of Plant Nitrogen Nutrition) is the result of a fusion between two research groups which both had more than 15 years of background in the field of plant nitrogen metabolism and molecular physiology (mainly in the study of NO3- and NH4+ assimilation). Our goal was to set up a recognized structure focussed on the study of plant nitrogen metabolism, with both molecular genetic and molecular physiology approaches. The research unit has facilities for standard molecular biology and biochemistry as well controlled growth chambers and a large green house for growing plants with dedicated staff who will be important for performing the large number of crosses and physiological analyses needed by this project. Our group has also a recognised expertise in obtaining transgenic plants e.g. expressing deregulated nitrate reductases, in obtaining mutants affected in the NO3- assimilatory pathway or in identifying new plant genes involved in nitrogen metabolism. In the last few years, our group has also conducted a leading research on the identification and characterisation of plant NO3- transporters. Our laboratory also has an expertise in the field of Arabidopsis molecular genetics and mutant screening. During the recent years, we have also acquired good knowledge of the screening procedure of the T-DNA tagged lines. Indeed we have identified insertions in a high-affinity NO3- transporter as well as in several 14-3-3 genes.

Furthermore, as part of the INRA research centre of Versailles, the Unité de Nutrition Azotée des Plantes has access to equipment such as confocal and scanning electron microscopes, resources like an extensive collection of Arabidopsis accessions and 50 000 T-DNA tagged lines as well as an excellent scientific environment (Seed Biology, Plant Breeding and Genetics and Cell Biology Laboratories with which Partner 1 has close links) will promote the research projects of the RTN (GFP studies, germination analyses, isolation of T-DNA mutants).

The Unité de Nutrition Azotée des Plantes has long standing experience in predoctoral as well as post-doctoral training and participates in the PhD training programs of the University of Versailles-St Quentin and of the agronomy school INA-PG. PhD thesis at the institute of partner 1 are well organised with beginning, midterm and final oral reports in front of a large audience with selected examiners. Training sessions for oral communication and for optimal use of different computer software are regularly organised at the INRA research centre of Versailles. Moreover French classes for foreigners are proposed for the newcomers, and housing facilities are available close to the research site.
